LIFE ON THE ISLAND

More than a place.
A way of life.

A morning coffee with nowhere to rush. Fresh bread, ripe tomatoes and olive oil on the table. An evening beside the harbour. From Rethymno to Panormo, Bali and the villages inland, life in Crete invites you to slow down and enjoy the everyday.

OUR CORNER OF CRETE

Harbour mornings.
Village afternoons.

Follow the coast from Rethymno towards Panormo and Bali, then head inland. The scenery changes from waterfront tables and sandy bays to olive groves, stone houses and little village lanes, with the inland mountains rising beyond.

PANORMO

Take a seat by the harbour.

Fishing boats, a small harbour and time to linger over lunch. Panormo is made for an unhurried wander, a coffee or a table overlooking the sea. Captain’s House sits above the harbour, with a view across the beach and water.

SKEPASTI & THE COUNTRYSIDE

A quieter kind of day.

In Skepasti and the villages inland, the appeal is often in the simple things: olive-growing countryside, familiar faces and a slower rhythm. Places such as Pigi offer another side of the area, away from the busiest seafronts.

BALI & ITS BAYS

Make time for the sea.

Bali’s coves bring beach days close to village life. Karavostasi is one of its smaller bays: a place to enjoy the water and settle into the day. Explore the different beaches, then find a taverna for a relaxed meal.

CRETE THROUGH THE SEASONS

A Mediterranean climate.
Four different moods.

Crete is known for hot, dry summers and milder, wetter winters. The experience changes with altitude, exposure and distance from the sea: a coastal village and a mountain settlement can feel very different on the same day.

01 / SPRING

The island turns green.

Wildflowers, olive groves and longer days make spring a lovely time to explore on foot. Expect a mix of sunshine, cooler evenings and occasional rain.

02 / SUMMER

Life moves outdoors.

Summers are typically hot and dry. Shaded terraces, early starts and evenings around the table become part of the rhythm. Coastal breezes offer relief, although heatwaves and strong winds can occur.

03 / AUTUMN

A gentler pace.

The heat gradually eases and village life settles after the busiest summer months. Early autumn can still feel summery, with rain becoming more likely as the season progresses.

04 / WINTER

Another side of Crete.

Coastal winters are generally milder than northern Europe, with wetter spells and cool nights. Inland and mountain areas are colder, and snow can settle on the high peaks.

A general seasonal guide, rather than a forecast. Weather varies from year to year and across the island.

ROOTED IN THE EVERYDAY

Fresh food.
A slower rhythm.

Fresh seasonal vegetables, local olive oil, warm bread, herbs and cheeses: much of the pleasure of eating here comes from good ingredients prepared simply. Pick up produce, put together a Greek salad or share a few dishes at a village taverna. There is no need to make a meal complicated.

The easy, laid-back life is about making room for these moments. Coffee in a village square. A conversation with a neighbour. A long lunch that turns into an afternoon. Summer brings busier coastal villages, while inland lanes and quieter seasons offer a different pace.

THE MOUNTAINS INLAND

Mount Ida on the horizon.
Another Crete to discover.

Beyond the bays and harbour villages, the island rises into a dramatic mountain landscape. Mount Ida, also known as Psiloritis, is Crete’s highest mountain: its summit reaches 2,456 metres. The surrounding UNESCO Global Geopark brings together high country, valleys, caves and villages with traditions of their own.

Village life in the foothills.

Head towards places such as Anogeia and the mountain scenery becomes part of the day. Make time for a village coffee, local cheeses and the music and customs that give inland Crete its character.

Room to explore.

The Nida Plateau, walking routes and the limestone landscapes of Psiloritis offer a different outing from the coast. The Talea Ori mountains, also known as Kouloukonas, add another striking backdrop closer to the Bali area.

A view for every season.

Clear horizons, changing light and snow on the high peaks in colder months give the inland landscape a rhythm of its own. A home with a mountain outlook can be just as compelling as a sea view.

Mountain walks range from local trails to demanding high-altitude routes. Choose a route suited to your experience and check local conditions before setting out.

TRADITIONS THAT LIVE ON

Music, gatherings
and a sense of place.

Cretan lyra music, traditional dancing and village celebrations keep local customs alive. Religious festivals and family occasions bring generations together, with each village adding its own character.

Rethymno’s old town offers another view of the island’s history, with Venetian and Ottoman influences visible in its streets and buildings. Beyond the town, the coast towards Panormo and Bali opens up into olive-growing countryside and inland villages such as Pigi. These places offer a quieter introduction to daily life.

A HOME FOR EVERY SEASON

Think beyond
the summer stay.

If you are planning a home here, consider how you would use it throughout the year. Summer shade and ventilation matter, alongside insulation, winter comfort and practical access.

The plot’s orientation, exposure to wind and connection to local amenities all help shape the right setting. Tell Dimitris how you want to live, and use that as the starting point for your plans.
